Challenging GT5 weekend for Richardson Racing at Knockhill
The Richardson Racing team endured a challenging weekend on track as the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge headed to Knockhill for the penultimate meeting of the season.
The Corby-based team headed for Scotland with a streamlined single car entry for Alex Toth-Jones, who was able to take his place on the grid thanks to the hard work of the team in repairing damage sustained in a high-speed incident during the previous round of the campaign at Spa.
With confidence high going into the weekend, Alex produced a solid display to secure seventh on the grid despite the short nature of the Knockhill circuit making it difficult to get a clear lap.
The opening race of the weekend on Saturday afternoon saw Alex fighting hard for a place in the top six, despite suffering with a lack of power compared to some of his rivals on the uphill run from the final hairpin.
In a race truncated by two Safety Car periods, he brought his car to the finish in sixth spot to pick up solid points to add to his tally.
Rain on Sunday provided a new challenge and would result in a messy race that had to be restarted after a multi-car incident on the opening lap.
In difficult wet conditions, Alex again fought hard in the midfield pack to cross the line in eighth place and he now heads for Donington Park for the season finale eager to end his year on a high.
“I felt confident we would be back on the front-running pace this weekend after testing, although it proved to be a challenging weekend in Scotland,” he said. “Qualifying was mental and it all came down to being able to get one clear lap on a busy track, so P7 on the grid for race one wasn’t too bad.
“In the race however, we didn’t seem to have the same power as some of the other cars, which meant I couldn’t make as much progress as I hoped and to finish where we did was a good result.
“We were down in the speed traps again in race two, and when you also add in the wet conditions that led to plenty of carnage and safety cars, I think we did well to pick up another top ten finish.
“I think I got the most I could from the weekend, and as a team, we need to look at why we were down on power ahead of the final rounds where I’m keen to fight for a place on the podium, particularly as I’ll have a lot of guests coming along to support me.”
